This is the opening keynote lecture from the 13th International Conference on Information Visualisation. Shape is an under-explored visual attribute in information visualization. Although usually listed on visual attribute tables as a single entry (shape), there are many sub-attributes of shape that can be independently encoded and combined such as curvature, angle, terminators, etc. Many examples illustrate the encodings of multivariate data into glyphs with utilizing multiple shape attributes.
